How we work as your bricklayer

Sub-contract for main contractors

Labour, or labour and materials, priced against your drawings and programme. We give you a start date we can hold and we tell you early if anything threatens it.

Self-build and one-off houses

Full external envelope, internal blockwork, and the cavity detailing that building control will inspect. We work alongside your architect and engineer rather than around them.

Facework and feature brickwork

Soldier courses, corbels, plinths, arches, banding and reveals set out properly. The details that make an elevation look designed rather than assembled.

Blockwork and internal walls

Load-bearing and partition blockwork, laid plumb and to gauge so the plasterer is not making up for it afterwards.

Setting out

Corners squared, gauge rods marked, and the courses planned so they land correctly at damp proof course, sill and lintel. Setting out is where a job is won or lost.

Day work where it genuinely suits

For small or undefined scopes we will agree a rate in writing before anyone starts. For anything defined we would rather price it fixed, because that puts the risk of a slow day on us instead of you.

Questions people ask before hiring a bricklayer

How much should I pay a bricklayer per day?

Day rates vary with region, gang size and the type of work, so any single published number is misleading. For a defined scope we would rather give you a fixed written price, because that means a slow day costs us rather than you. If you specifically want day work we will agree the rate in writing before anybody starts.

Will you work to my architect's drawings?

Yes, that is most of what this page is for. Send us the drawings and the structural engineer's details and we will price against them. If something on the drawing will not build as drawn, and that happens more often than architects like, you will hear about it before it is built rather than after.

Do you do sub-contract bricklaying for other builders?

Yes. We take sub-contract packages for main contractors, developers and self-builders across Luton, Dunstable and the surrounding area, either labour only or labour and materials. We will only commit to a start date we can actually staff.

What is the difference between a bricklayer and a builder?

A bricklayer lays brick and block. A builder or building contractor takes responsibility for the whole job, which includes the other trades, the programme, the structural design and building control. BXC Developments does both, and if you come to us for a bricklayer when what you actually need is a contractor, we will say so.

How far will you travel for bricklaying work?

Most of our work is within about twenty minutes of Luton, which covers Dunstable, Houghton Regis, Caddington, Streatley, Barton-le-Clay, Toddington, Harpenden and Leighton Buzzard. For a longer package we will travel further, and we will be honest with you if the travel makes us the wrong choice.

Ask us for the current certificate and we will send it to you before you commit to anything. We will not make a general claim about cover on a web page that we cannot date, because your job needs the policy that is live on the day you start.
